Let’s face it, most people nowadays use smartphones. However good, bad, cheap or expensive they are, they usually share one major flaw – terrible battery life. Of course, our definition of terrible is based on the old phone designs of decades past, when you often forgot where your charger is. This might become a reality once more, as wireless charging technologies evolve. The tech evolved enough to make it into the fashion industry at least, and more specifically, into a pair of pants.
English fashion designer Adrien Sauvage has just unveiled his latest creation this Tuesday, in London – a pair of pants equipped with wireless charging capabilities. Sauvage collaborated with Microsoft (who now owns Nokia) to incorporate wireless charging into every day apparel, in this case, a pair of trousers. Sauvage explained that he realized how today’s clothes weren’t taking care of a modern man’s every day needs. Well, I’m not sure about you, but pants were working just fine for me, but granted, if I can charge my phone while strolling down a boulevard, I won’t be one to complain.
So how do the magical pants work? Well, a Nokia DC-50 wireless charging plate is carefully woven into the front pocket of the trousers. Placing your phone in that pocket will ensure that the device is being charged up while walking. The energy is transferred between the charger and the phone via an electromagnetic field. In order to charge up the wireless charger hidden within the pants themselves, all you need is a Micro USB cable. In simple terms, charge up your pants, put them on, and then charge up your phone while walking. Not bad Mr. Sauvage, not bad.

“This collaboration is the first full integration of high-end technology and high-end fashion. The project has been an exploration of other directions that wearable technology may take, with a focus on how our current wireless technology can be integrated into a garment you already wear. We’ll definitely look to continue innovating this space.” said Adam Johnson, the Head of Microsoft’s UK Marketing division. The wireless charger pants will cost around $340 and will be made available soon through Amazon.
