The iPhone 6 is rumored to be releasing on the 19th of September this year, at least when it comes to the smaller, 4.7 inch version. The larger, 5.5 inch iPhone 6 will likely come later, in November. However, these dates could not be entirely accurate. Generally speaking, retailers are cutting prices on smartphones and tablets whenever they are ready to begin the transition to their newer upcoming models. We knew the iPhone 5S and 5C would be getting cheaper as Apple launches the iPhone 6, but it seems this is happening sooner rather than later.
Walmart has just revealed to Engaget that it is dropping the prices on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The first numbers concern the iPhone 5S’ 16 GB version, which will now be available for $99 with a two-year contract. This is a $50 price-trim, and it’s permanent (not a temporary sale). The iPhone 5C is also getting cheaper, with the 16 GB phone retailing for $29 with the same, two-year contract. There are no exact figures for the iPhone 5S and 5C’s 32 GB versions yet, but Walmart mentioned that these too will be getting lowered prices. Is this a sign that Walmart is getting ready to launch the iPhone 6?
While the move would certainly suggest so, there’s no indication that Apple is ready to start selling its iPhone 6 earlier than September. We’re still almost 3 months away from the expected launch window, so why is Walmart turning towards such an aggressive campaign? Granted, getting rid of old stocks to make room for the newer (and reportedly much better) iPhone 6 would be a logical move, but perhaps the retailer is starting too early? Many argue that Walmart’s decision to trim the prices of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C are a clear indication that the retailer at least knows the official release date for the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 will feature multiple improvements over the last model, including Apple’s TouchID technology, the new A8 64-bit processor, as well as the new iOS 8 which Apple recently showcased.

In any case, whatever the release date of the iPhone 6 may be, the new Walmart deal for the iPhone 5S and 5C isn’t one to neglect. If you’re not entirely convinced about the iPhone 6’s potential or simply want to buy a new smartphone right now, both these phones are now affordable enough and offer a good bang for the buck.
