Mobile security has become a major issue ever since the smartphone market became overcrowded and upgrades were made almost every day. From the four digit codes to fingerprint and retina scanning sensors, security evolved visibly, and the many ways of protecting your private data exist only because technology evolved and along with it, hackers. As fingerprint and retina scanning are already used and respectively, in development, Motorola came-up with something new and quite different, namely, the “digital tattoo”. For those of you thinking about something similar to body-painting, know you’re wrong, because in this case “tattoo” has nothing to do with paint or needles.
The “digital tattoo” is nothing more than a nickle-sized sticker that adheres on your wrist and enables you to unlock your smartphone. As simple as that, not that any sticker works. Motorola’s sticker has circuitry that allow you to unlock the device with just one tap. Apparently, a user spends more than 2 seconds unlocking the smartphone, action he does about 40 times per day, according to Motorola. Because of this, many users don’t even bother locking the device and so, they leave it, along with private data, unprotected. Motorola’s digital tattoo allows users to unlock the devices with only one tap, thus unlocking the smartphone is more convenient and takes less time. It’s been months since a new mobile security system was introduced, so we can say Motorola’s tattoo came just at the right time. Considering wearable technology is slowly building a market of its own, these stickers may soon become another wanted fashion accessory.

As any accessory, the stickers don’t last forever. You can wear one for five days and don’t worry, it won’t come off when you take a shower or go swimming. Yet, after five days the tattoo becomes completely useless and needs to be replaced with a new one. Replacing it won’t be an issue, all you have to do is buy another one and stick it to your wrist. The digital tattoos are not very expensive, a pack of ten costing only ten dollars, meaning you’ll spend $10 for fifty days of mobile protection. If you’re interested, you can buy a pack of ten from VivaLnk. Note that the digital tattoo was made specially for the Moto X, so trying to unlock other devices will be a waste of time, unless you’ve got the X.
