Downton Abbey returns on ITV in the United Kingdom for a fifth series this autumn. ITV, the British network that broadcasts the show, announced that the period drama will have a UK press launch on August 14th. There are a couple of details discussed by the cast, along with the executive producer Gareth Neame. The fifth season will pick up six months after the events in the finale of season four, meaning that the story takes place in 1924. New characters will be introduced, such as Lady Anstruther played by Anna Chancellor, but that means that guest stars will not appear this season (specifically Paul Giamatti and Shirley MacLaine).
Lady Mary, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, is ready to get back in the game, after the loss of her husband Matthew. “She’s embracing her new life, really self. She’s got a bit of her bite back.” the actress declared. For those who were hoping for any romantic ties between Mary and Tom, Allan Leech, who plays Tom, said “They’re both looking for love … but not with each other. They become closer as confidants. They’re after the same thing for Downtown, which is sustainability. They’ve come together on a united front.” So, at least for a couple of episodes, these two will be taking care of the prosperity of Downtown.
It seems that we will be learning more of the Dowager Countess’ (Maggie Smith) past! The viewers will be introduced to Prince Kuragin (Rade Sherbedgia), who is an old acquaintance of the Countess. The Middle Crawley sister, Edith, still cannot get any rest. People around her pity her, even her own father. Mr. Gregston is still missing, and her daughter, Marigold, is being raised by the farmers she entrusted her to. The British period drama gathers about 9 million viewers per episode, making it one of the most anticipated series to air in the world. People have been following the story of the aristocrat family and the downstairs staff that maintains the mansion for four years, and four seasons, plus the Christmas specials. The beautiful Highclere Castle in Hampshire is used for the exterior scenes, and the beautiful costumes add up to the aesthetics of the drama that millions of viewers love the most.

Fans from the United States, however, will have to wait a little longer for the release of their favorite show. The series will run on PBS on Sunday, January 4th 2015. But, not to fear, US fans! Just one hour before the premiere, you will get to see a documentary titled “The Manners of Downtown Abbey”, which will feature set historian Alastair Bruce explaining the important aspects that make the show as close to reality as it is.
