On the 9th of September 2014, U2 announced they will be releasing their thirteenth album, after suspending their work back in 2013. Better than that, the album was released digitally at no cost the same day. This came as a surprise to all the fans world-wide. The physical version of ‘Songs of innocence’ is due to be released October 10th. In addition to the new album, Bono announced that there will also be a follow-up called ‘Songs of Experience’ and rumor has it the third part should be expected soon-‘Songs of Ascent’.
The new record is a mixture of melodramatic tunes like ‘Song for someone’, anthemic and catchy songs -‘The miracle (of Joey Ramone)’, ‘Every breaking wave’ and a few unusual tracks. A big surprise for the fans will be the closing track of the album ‘The Troubles’ featuring Swedish indie pop star Lykke Li, the sole collaborator on U2’s lattest album. The album was recorded in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles and is produced by Danger Mouse. Credits also go to Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood.
The physical release of the album will also include a 24-page booklet. The fans will be able to purchase the deluxe edition as well which contains acoustic versions of the new songs plus four additional tracks: ‘Lucifer’s hands’, ‘The Crystal Ballroom’, ‘The Troubles (Alternative version’) and ‘Sleep like a baby tonight (Alternative Perspective Mix by Tchad Blake)’. Besides the new album, the well renowned band also has a project with Apple, which they hope will discourage music piracy. This new technology is made to reinvent the album artwork in general and hopefully people will begin buying music again instead of downloading it from the internet. This new concept will focus on creativity and will transform the way we listen to music.
