Windows 9: Microsoft to Reveal Official Name For the New OS

Microsoft will most likely reveal the name of its next operating system at a special press event to be held in San Francisco next Tuesday. According to reports, the name of the new OS will be just one of the several news to be announced during the event. There is a lot of guessing going on about what the next major version of Microsoft’s operating system will be called. Some sources refer to it as “Threshold”, others consider either Windows 9 or simply Windows to be the most likely moniker chosen by the Redmond giant for its new product.

According to news reports, Microsoft’s president has referred to the new product as “Windows 9” in a conversation with a colleague. Later reports say that this was not the official name for the product, as the final decision has not yet been made. One of the possible directions Microsoft could take is choosing a single brand for its leading products at the time – Windows Phone and Xbox One – and try to repair some of the damage done by its previous OS, Windows 8. We will surely find out more on Tuesday.

Until then, let’s see a roundup of what the internet thinks it knows about the future Windows operating system. Actually, there is not much to know about the new version of Windows. Specialists expect to see a further update to Windows 8 (probably 8.2) to be released before it, but no Windows 8.3. The new OS will probably be previewed in March 2015, maybe at CeBIT. According to the leaked info available on various blogs, the new version of Windows will come with a new and improved Notifications Center, will use multiple virtual desktops on the same screen, apps running in windowed mode.

Besides, according to some rumors the new Windows will include Cortana, Microsoft’s take on the voice activated digital assistant. Currently available for Windows Phone only, Cortana could become available for desktop users in Windows 9 (or whatever its name would be). Maybe one of the most important features expected to be introduced in Windows 9 is the cross-platform compatibility of app, making it easy to run programs designed for Windows Phone or Xbox One on desktop PCs. A new interface, Start menu, and new input methods like gesture control are just the cherry on top.
