This weekend was an important milestone in director David Fincher’s career – not only has his movie Gone Girl top the weekend Box Office charts, but it has also gathered his largest opening amount yet. Ben Affleck also has reasons to be happy, as he hasn’t had such a profitable opening since the 2003 premiere of Daredevil.
Gone Girl, a mystery-drama-thriller movie directed by David Fincher (known for Fight Club, Panic Room and The Social Network) has reached the top spot of the Box Office charts, gathering over $38 million over the weekend. This is the highest first weekend income ever generated by a Fincher movie – his previous record was set in 2002, at the premiere of Panic Room. Ben Affleck has also had a period of weak openings until this movie – the last time one of his movies scored over $30 million was in 2003, at the debut of his superhero flick Daredevil.
Gone Girl is about a man, Dick Dunne (Ben Affleck), whose wife disappears at their fifth marriage anniversary. Under pressure from the media on one side, and the police on the other. the portrait of a happily married couple slowly disappears, being replaced by the suspicion of Nich himself being responsible for her wife being gone.
There was a tight competition at the top of the Box Office – the second place was occupied by Annabelle, a horror title with every element of a chilling, exciting and fearful evening in front of the big screen. The movie came in second by a small margin – it gathered only around $37 million, that was enough for the second place. The movie was directed by John R. Leonetti, known for Butterfly Effect 2 and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
