Five people dead after suicide bomber attack in Grozny, Chechen Republic

A suicide bomber has blown himself up in Grozny, the capital of Chechen Republic. Five police officers were killed on the spot, while at least 12 other police officers were injured. The attacker was identified as Opti Mudarov, a 19 year old resident of Grozny. There is information stating that no civilians were hurt during the bombing. The attack took place in front of a concert hall, during the City Days in Grozny.

The police officers were the ones who died and got injured because they had approached the suspect. The officers thought that the individual was acting suspicious. Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya said that he was informed that the suicide bomber approached police forces and introduced himself as a law enforcement staffer. Police officers were suspicious of him and intended to perform a search on him. As soon as the police officers initiated the search, the suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive, killing the people around him. A police spokesman declared the following: “According to the latest data, the blast killed five policemen, twelve others received wounds”. Four police officers died on the spot. The fifth one died hours later at the hospital, due to the severe injuries he had sustained.

He declared on his Instagram page: “I want to assure you that none of those who had the slightest connection to the bastard, at whose fault people were killed, will escape severe punishment”. A local police officer declared to the press: “Police officers who were manning metal detectors at the entrance of the concert hall noticed a suspicious young man. When the police officers decided to check the individual, the man blew himself up”.

A local hospital confirmed that 10 people had suffered injuries, however none were life-threatening. Initially, local press declared the suicide bomber had miraculously survived. Russia’s National Anti-Terror Committee however, quickly denied that statement, saying the suicide bomber had died during the blast, along with the other victims.  The family of Mudarov had not head from him for a long time. It was believed that the suicide bomber had joined a gang and police were already looking for him.
