Brad Pitt and his team of rugged, World War II tank fighters in their war machine called “Fury” have knocked out Ben Affleck and his kidnapped wife in the weekend box office standings, debuting with a gross of $23.5 million, Variety reports. David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” came in second this weekend, after two weeks in the top spot, with a $17.8 million gross, raising the movie’s total to $107.1 million in three weeks.
“Fury” tells the story of the crew of a Sherman tank fighting its way through World War II Germany, led by Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt). The crew (Michael Pena, Jon Bernthal, Shia LaBeouf) was just joined by an idealistic, but inexperienced new member (Lerman), who is facing the horrors of war for the first time in his life. The movie was written and directed by David Ayer, director of movies like the End of Watch or Sabotage. The movie has opened lower than it was predicted – the producers expected an opening weekend of at least $25 million. This was its opening weekend, though – it has loads of time to live up to expectations.
“The Book of Life”, 20th Century Fox’s animated fantasy feature produced by Academy Award nominee Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, has opened at the third spot of the weekend box office, with a gross of $17 million gathered from over 3,000 theaters. The movie cost over $50 million to produce. It has a very unusual and unique visual style, and presents the fears of a young man’s life through three fantastic worlds in this Day of the Dead themed comedy.
