John Wick Beaten by Ouija in Weekend Box Office

Ouija, the low budget horror flick filmed using an estimated budget of about $5 million has stolen the top spot of the weekend Box Office in the US, collecting over $20 million from 2,858 cinemas across the nation, Variety reports. This performance was enough to easily take over John Wick, the latest Keanu Reeves movie, which was not expected to perform this good at theaters anyway.

Ouija was produced by big names, such as Michael Bay and Jason Blum, the producer behind a series of horror blockbusters like Paranormal Activity and Insidious. The budget of the movie was minuscule – $5 million, as Universal Pictures has revealed. This means the studio is in for some healthy profits for this one. Actually, this is the seventh movie produced by Jason Blum to land in the top spot of the Box Office.

John Wick, the latest revenge action movie starring Keanu Reeves, was not expected to perform on its opening weekend, most analysts predicting it to gather revenues of up to $8 million at most. This is why everybody was so surprised by its performance in the weekend – in the 2,589 locations it opened in, it gathered the amount of $14.1 million. The last movie Reeves was involved with, 47 Ronin, was a major flop, and this one looked like another one for the actor who once was Neo (sic!), but apparently the news about Reeves talking up a role in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie has stirred up the interest for him.

Brad Pitt’s tank war drama Fury fell 45% since its opening weekend, gathering $13 million in its second weekend, which brings its domestic total up to $46 million. David Fincher’s Gone Girl was fourth, with another $11.1 million added to its domestic gross, while the fifth place in the top 10 is occupied by The Book of Life, the animated feature directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez and produced by Academy Award winner director Guillermo del Toro.
