Kim Kardashian on 2 Broke Girls – desperate move?

The reality TV star Kim Kardashian made a guest appearance in 2 Broke Girls. By that I mean she was on the screen for under a minute. Her role was very limited in dialogue and nuances, as one would expect. The first episode of the 4th season kicked off with this much anticipated feature. The premise of the episode is that “Keeping up with the Kardashians” needs a location and a scout happens to like Max and Caroline’s cupcake shop. On hearing the news Caroline is very excited, and the always dark Max despises the idea. The whole episode is peppered with poking fun at the Kardashian but in a moderate manner. As the Max character (played by Kat Dennings) puts it: “we can’t stop watching this show about them doing nothing”. Sophie, the older polish imigrant lady (played by Jennifer Coolidge, a.k.a. Stifler’s Mom) said “They’re like the Kennedys but with bigger asses”. It’s not exactly a puff piece on the Kardashians, but it isn’t as mean as they could have been.

The whole Kim Kardashian on 2 Broke Girls seems very ill fitting. Sure, they both have poor dialogue and very badly developed characters. Not to mention shoddy and nonsensical storylines, a lame claim to fame and very bad directing. But at least 2 Broke Girls features real entertainers and tries to be funny. At times it even succeeds, with some of their many puns and sexual innuendos hitting the mark. Other times they fall flat by being predictable and very obviously set up. We can chalk that up to bad writing and directing. The acting of Kat Dennings, Beth Behrs –  the main characters somewhat redeem the show. 2 Broke Girls is a commercial success, and it’s sad that that’s all the producers are interested in. Sometimes a good show doesn’t necessary equal big ratings and profits. The best you could wish for is a combination between profits and quality.

Choosing to feature Kim Kardashian on 2 Broke Girls instead of a funny comedian seems as a bad move. But in the world of showbusiness fame + fame = more fame is a desirable formula. It might be that Withney Cummings (creator and producer) is afraid of the failure of Whitney. Although everything from plot, character development, punchlines and even set design was much better on “Whitney”. The show, sadly, got canceled after 2 seasons. Maybe Whitney Cummings could take a page from Louis CK’s book and do it over and over until you win an Emmy. “Louie” is expected to premiere its 5th season in 2015. Another thing Louie did right was choosing a more british approach to television: shorter seasons, longer episodes. Of course it’s hard to have commercial success with a limited schedule, but it’s also close to impossible to write 24 funny episodes in a short span. We hope in the future 2 Broke Girls will feature actors, not just TV personalities.
