Wes Anderson is a clash of old and new ideas, of unpredictable twists and mastery visuals, ranging from realistic to not so down-to-earth characters, driven by an outer force which keeps him from settling to the profile of a classic director. He is the wanderer, the unanimously accepted rule exception. His universe is a merry-go-round in itself, and I am not stating this only due to his latest desire to help create a theme-park together with musician Mark Mothersbaugh, but because his movies are a total spin and are, at the same time, free of tedious rides. All I am trying to underline is that Wes Anderson is a permanent novelty, an on-changing decor.
His participation at the Lisbon and Estoril Film Festival held between 7 and 16 November 2014 is the perfect argument on the matter of Wes Anderson’s versatile nature. Guest of this annual edition of LEFFEST on the 8th, The Grand Budapest Hotel’s creator chose to present Vittorio de Sica’s The Gold of Naples and connected the work of the Italian with a discussion of his future projects.
Although he has recently revealed his desire of opening a theme park (this would be a great treat for fans all over the world), Wes Anderson does not intend to leave the cinematographic stage. What is more, during a Question & Answer session at the above mentioned festival, the charismatic artist revealed that he is thinking about returning to stop-motion for his upcoming picture. To prove that the news is no fling, Wes Anderson furthermore mentioned ‘’that the story would be divided into episodes, not unlike Vittorio De Sica’s The Gold of Naples, which tells six different vignettes whose only connection is the fact that they all take place in Naples’’.
Wes Anderson is no newbie of stop-motion animation, as his 2009 Fantastic Mr. Fox rightfully proves. The cast includes voices such as George Clooney, Meryl Streep or Bill Murray and they all add to the magic of the characters. If the smashing Rotten Tomatoes gave Anderson mostly encouraging and ‘’fresh’’ reviews and comments for the 2009 stop-motion, we are bound to trust and anxiously wait for his next project, of which we will most definitely find out more in the future.
