Johnny Depp is such a versatile actor (who actually wanted to become a musician when young) that any introduction would be futile. He was the very dramatic Edward Scissorhands (1990), the charismatic Don Juan in Don Juan DeMarco (1994) – in which he starred along the great Marlon Brando -, the eccentric Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Victor’s voice in Corpse Bride (2005) and the endless list is not even near completion.
Mortdecai is one of Johnny Depp’s 2015 scheduled films, and is due to be released on 23 January. Lionsgate released the first trailer of the upcoming production sometime during summer, but has now greeted the fans with a second variant.
In the second trailer of Mortdecai, Johnny Depp starts by pointing out the intrigue of the movie, the disappearance of a Goya painting, which triggers the entire plot and makes him the one designated to find the art piece. He only agrees to the task if offered: ”Queen and country, travel and living expenses and reasonable overhead”.
Furthermore, Johnny Depp gives a brief but comprehensive description of his character, through the voice of the art redeemer, as his speech is in the first person: ‘’I am lord Charlie Mortdecai, respected by all who know me… slightly. I am an art dealer, an aficionado’’.
Mordecai Trailer #2 is a much more improved Trailer #1 because it makes the story line accurate for the viewers, as the voice of Johnny Depp accompanies the visuals, whereas in the first variant, half of the trailer was covered in music (good, fitting music, though), but which, at least at the begging gave the impression of a romance movie (I cannot stop picturing the sound of the black heel stepping on the pavement). In the second trailer, that particular scene from trailer number one is given an explanation, and the relationship between Charlie Mordecai and his wife, Johanna, is established:
Mortdecai: I’m afraid I shell have to put my foot down, darling.
Johanna: Sorry?
Mortdecai: With your permission, of course.
This sample of conversation gives Johnny Depp’s character irony, (apparent) submissiveness and the very obvious charm and refinement.
Johnny Depp stars in the movie alongside Gwyneth Paltrow (the already mentioned Johanna), Paul Bettany (Jock Strapp), Ewan McGregor (Inspector Martland) and Olivia Munn, who becomes ‘’a well-known nymphomaniac’’.
