The Crown Series Confirmed by Netflix

Netflix brought viewers numerous appreciated TV Series, including House of Cards, starring the great Kevin Spacey. Their latest confirmation dictates that The Crown, a British drama, will be aired starting from 2016. For this project, Netflix is made to leave its comfort zone and deal with a thematic and a context which was never approached before, as this is its first UK based production of such kind.

The Crown was written by English writer and producer Peter Morgan and is based on the controversial matter of the United Kingdom during the reign of Queen Elisabeth II. To quote Netflix itself, the drama would “tell the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century”.

The TV Series The Crown is based on Peter Morgan’s play entitled The Audience, which centers around the regular meetings between Queen Elizabeth II and the prime minister of Great Britain. Nonetheless, the series will not be a solely political one, as it will primarily encompass important events in history which will be treated with (we hope) sarcasm and black comedy lines. Whatever the case, viewers must take into consideration that Morgan’s play (and implicitly TV Series) is no comparison to Orange Is the New Black, another black comedy of Netflix.

The TV Series cast is a pending issue and the world-wide public expects for the name of the actors to be released. The ‘’almost official’’ first name in The Crown is British actress Claire Foy. According to Deadline, she has been offered the part of the young queen in the first season: ‘’If the deal closes, Foy would likely play the younger Queen in Morgan’s ambitious drama, which charts the monarch’s reign from the moment she heard of her father George VI’s death in 1952 through to present day’’. Representatives of the Season of the Witch actress have yet to answer to the invitation. If she accepts the part, she is likely to play the Queen during her youth (part to be covered by the first season), because the chronological events during the long-lasting rule does not permit a single actress to play the part of the Queen entirely. It is not established if Helen Mirren will be the older variant of the Queen – it is still only a wild guess. The actress has played the same role in the movie The Queen (2006), another Peter Morgan story, tackling on the same topic.

Admirers should encourage Netflix for its choice and should wait breathlessly for The Crown‘s release. The aim is to portray a vivid and realistic Queen Elizabeth, taking into consideration the real-life background of the ‘’character’’.
