I recently went to a friend’s birthday party and while having a blast with everybody else I got to discover this amazing singer, a guy that makes music using only sounds made by him (his mouth). His name is Mike Tompkins.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada during the historic tornado on July 31st, 1987, life for Mike Tompkins has been punctuated by memorable events, the most recent of which includes being rocketed to notoriety mixing his talents to create music using only his voice and mouth. Mike’s novel ‘A Capella’ music has stemmed from over a decade of demanding and diverse musical and production pursuits, starting with beatboxing at the young age of 8.
From musical theatre production in highschool, to production, engineering and mixing of numerous albums (Juno award winning artist Shad K’s “The Old Prince”) during post-secondary education at the industry renowned Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology, Mike Tompkins’ resume now includes collaboration as a producer and writer with Timbaland on his most recent Shock Value 3 album set for release in 2012.
The past year’s whirlwind of activities began when celebrity blogger Perez Hilton posted Mike Tompkins’ cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”/Bruno Mars “Just The Way You Are” quoting him as “Pretty on the eyes and ears” in September 2010, shooting the video to over 2 million views in under a month. This allowed the world to see his talent, which were quickly recognized by Ellen Degeneres and artist/producer Timbaland. This was followed shortly by appearances on The Ellen Show, The Today Show and two trips to Miami to work with Timbaland.
Confident yet amazingly down to earth, Mike Tompkins’ goal remains to make great music, put a smile on people’s faces and show his diversity as an artist. With over 400,000 YouTube subscribers and over 70 million views of his songs, Mike Tompkins is well on his way to achieving these goals, and it is just the beginning!
