Shailene Woodley may be a young actress, but the latest titles in her filmography (including 2014’s The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent or the 2015 announced Insurgent) give her the privilege of refusing upcoming parts. Shailene, the already Hollywood figure, is now given the opportunity to star in the latest Oliver Stone project, informs The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive article. The title of the movie has not yet been established, but the picture follows the already viral story of Edward Snowden, former CIA employee who leaked classified information to the press.
The 23 year-old actress (who has recently celebrated her anniversary – on Saturday) is rumored to play the part of Snowden’s girlfriend, Lindsay Mills. Being the most important female character in a movie about a young computer genius is not an easy to refuse offer, especially when the main part is set for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Although his carrier as an actor initiated before the 1990’s, teenage girls of today probably remember him from his role as Tom in the romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer. In the meantime, the American actor has grown to roles in awards winning movies such as Inception (2010), The Dark Night Rises (2012) or Looper (2012). If Shailene’s presence in the movie is debatable, it is certain that Gordon-Levitt will play the part of Snowden.
Oliver Stone’s movie draws inspiration from The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man, book written by Luke Harding, Guardian journalist, and from Time of the Octopus. The latter name makes reference to an upcoming novel written by Anatoly Kucherena, Edward’s lawyer, who shares on the experience gained while working with the computer boy in Russia, The Guardian informs.
Edward Snowden became a world-wide known computer professional in June 2013. He then revealed classified documents to journalists and is being hunted by the American authorities ever since. Established in Hawaii in the summer of last year, Snowden travelled to Hong Kong in order to share NSA top-secret documents to journalists Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald – Luke Harding’s book marks this exact period of time. When the American Justice condemned him, the whistle-blower flew to Russia in order to seek asylum. For the following period of time, Snowden lived in the Russian airport, as he “could not enter Russia because he did not have a Russian visa and he could not travel to safe haven opportunities in Latin America because the United States had canceled his passport’’ (according ABC News). Kucherena’s novel in based on the experience gained along with the American whistleblower, while he was in limbo, at the airport.
Citizenfour is a Laura Poitras documentary based on the experience of Snowden, which also gives information about Lindsay Mills’ background and current location (hopefully Shailene Woodley’s future character).
