Limbo is one of those games that fly low under the radar until they become hits. Sleeper hit, underdog you name it. Limbo is that. Its beautiful art style, crisp controls and striking atmosphere make it a great 2D side scroller. Imagine the surprise that early Xbox One buyers got when they saw a message saying that Limbo will be theirs for free.
Several Xbox One users who purchased the console at the beginning received thank you messages that go like this: “Thanks for being an Xbox One early adopter. To celebrate Year One, we’re giving you Limbo when it’s released. Stay tuned, your free code will arrive here.”There are certain criterias for which the owners will have to meet in order for them to get their hands on a free copy. They must have bought the console before November 11, 2014 at one of Xbox One’s 13 launch markets and need to have played 10+ hours. The puzzle platformer was seen in October on a ratings board in South Korea as being for Xbox One suggesting that the game would be ported. The game’s developer Playdead released Limbo four years ago on Xbox 360. Seeing how the next generation is upon us and new games are released by the dozen, it’s nice to see such gestures that remind us that there are other games besides Triple-A projects.
The plot behind Limbo is very cryptic and it deals with a nameless boy who wakes up in the middle of a forest. The boy needs to find his missing sister and has to deal with humans who want to kill him and a spider that is way too big to not be frightening. I say cryptic because that’s kind of it, the game does not have a narrative, objective based missions or context for that matter. The sister is basically the princess from Mario. Limbo’s art style is very unique being presented to us in black and white with a film grain effect that adds to the peculiar atmosphere. Many critics have even regarded Limbo as being expressionistic and artistic. Limbo for Xbox One does not have a release date as the developer mentions that the game will be on our consoles “soon”.
