Paranormal Activity glued us to our seats with its atmospheric use of the camera, and established a suspense that few horror flicks seem to achieve nowadays. The sequels that followed, though, were hits or misses. Everything that came after the original tried to recapture that sense of dread and suspense but nothing could scratch our itch for a good fright. Maybe the fifth entry will do just that. Paranormal Activity 5 is currently filming and judging from Bloody Disgusting’s report, it seems that the newest entry in the ghost franchise will be released in 3D using post-conversion technology.
The found footage film formula is not something new with The Blair Witch Project being the grandaddy of said genre. It’s ironic how a new property such as Paranormal Activity has raised the bar and now others are trying to measure up not to Blair With but to the ghost flick. The story behind these films revolves around different families that are haunted by a supernatural entity. Basically a ghost. As Paramount’s fifth movie is being forwarded as a 3D project, more horror films will soon follow. If the technique proves to be succesfull that is. Another great obstacle that the original rose past was how it took advantage of its low budget and gave us a good fright for our bucks. Truly, the juggernaut that is today rose from a well executed good idea. This is proof that you don’t need a succesful actor to get attention nor a big budget worldwide release.
Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension is being directed by Greg Plotkin the editor of the franchise and it is based on a script from newcomers Jason Pagan and Andrew Stark. Will they bring the glory days back? It remains to be seen as Paranormal Activity 5 is slated for a 13 March 2015 release. Another take in the Paranormal Activity franchise, intitled The Marked Ones premiered at the beginning of 2014 and did not get a good reception. Many critics stated that the change of setting and tone proved to be one of the movie’s best qualities but in the end it failed in the scare department. The fifth movie has a lot to make up for and maybe the 3D approach will be a welcomed addition.
