The moment die-hard Star Wars fans have been waiting for is quickly closing in, even though it still seems like an eternity until we finally get to see the sequel to Return of the Jedi. The fact that Disney has just released the first official trailer (it’s more like a teaser trailer) for the movie isn’t making things any easier either. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is the movie fans of the original trilogy have been hoping for, and will no longer be a prequel to the original saga, but a continuation, with the plot taking place 30 years after the events in Episode VI. The movie has well-known director J.J. Abrams (responsible for rebooting the Star Trek franchise too) at its helm, and will see the return of many of the original Star Wars cast, including Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker). Of course, these will most likely be guest appearances, with a multitude of talented young actors joining the cast, including Lupita Nyong’o and Oscar Isaac.
The teaser doesn’t show much, but what it does show manages to get us super-excited. We see stormtroopers, droids, X-Wing fighters, the Millennium Falcon and a ridiculously designed lightsaber. While the lightsaber doesn’t tickle my personal fancy, there’s still a lot of time until the movie’s release on the 18th of December, 2015, so who knows, things might change. On the bright-side, there’s no Jar-Jar, and that makes me ridiculously happy and hopeful.
What are your thoughts on the trailer? In case you’re worried about the quality of the CGI and effects, you shouldn’t be. There’s still more than one year before Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits the big screen, so the bulk of the effects are yet to be added. What’s your take on George Lucas stepping down from the director’s chair and J.J. Abrams stepping in to fill some pretty big shoes?
