Xperia Z Ultra gets Android 5.0 Lollipop build

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is among the first smartphones to get an early build of Android 5.0 Lollipop from the XDA Developers. Android 5.0 Lollipop is the most anticipated Android release ever since Jelly Bean, so it’s natural that everybody is clamoring to get their hands on it as early as possible. While the Xperia L update has already brought Lollipop to most units, the Xperia Z Ultra is just now receiving an unofficial Android 5.0 Lollipop build.

The diligent devs over at XDA Developers have worked out an AOSP-based Android 5.0 Lollipop build for the Xperia Z Utlra phablet. Developer Saatvik Shukla managed to port the Android 5.0 Lollipop build from the Xperia Z1 and turn it into an AOSP-based Lollipop for the Xperia Z Ultra. Since the Xperia Z Ultra Android 5.0 Lollipop build is unofficial, expect some bugs and for some things not to work. Nonetheless, you can still experience the Lollipop treatment with Material Design on the phablet before Sony releases the official Xperia Z Ultra Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

The Xperia Z Ultra is one of the biggest Sony devices, with a 6.4 inch display to boast with. Once you install the Android 5.0 Lollipop build on the phone, you’ll notice that the camera, GPS and video player won’t work for you. Don’t be alarmed, as this issue will be fixed once you get an official Android 5.0 Lollipop update courtesy of Sony. Be wary, though, because in order to install this build on the Xperia Z Ultra, you will have to flash your device, which will void your warranty and you shouldn’t do it on your own, unless you have some experience in the field.

The Xperia Z Ultra has a 6.4 inch display with a 1080*1920 resolution and 342 ppi pixel density. While the phone is huge, it is pretty decently specced. The Xperia Z Ultra is endowed with an  8 MP rear camera and a 2 MP front shooter and runs on a quad core Snapdragon 800 CPU, backed by the usual Adreno 330 GPU, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage, expandable via microSD card. The huge display on the Xperia Z Ultra is powered by a 3050 mAH battery, which makes for pretty decent battery life. Have you flashed Android 5.0 Lollipop to your behemoth yet? Or do you think waiting for an official Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z Ultra is the better course of action?
