When Frozen opened in theaters, we were shocked at how beautiful the film was. Who knew snow and ice would be so entertaining? Disney struck gold with this CG- animated musical and earned them praise, many critics considering Frozen to be one of the best Disney animated musical since the 90’s. Not to mention, the film made over 1 billion dollars wordlwide at the box office. Plus it won a whole lot of awards, but what stood out the most was their hit song “Let It Go” that inadvertently went viral in a couple of days. Well, let’s hope that the sequel will have another hit song.
During an interview with The Telegraph, the actress who voiced Elsa, Idina Menzel, did not hesitate to answer if the sequel to Frozen is happening. A stage musical was also up there in the rumor department but the actress shed some light on both projects: “They’re all in the works”. It may still be awhile before official word from Disney comes but knowing this much still gives comfort. The story behing Frozen was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s story, The Snow Queen. It revolves around Elsa, Princess of Arendelle whose powers to control ice have trapped her kingdom in an eternal winter. Anna, her sister sets off to help Elsa and make things right before it’s too late. Menzel has to come back as Elsa if the sequel will be a continuation of the first story.
Before Frozen 2 will hit theaters another project set in the icy universe is underway and will arrive in Spring 2015 in the form of an animated short called Frozen Forever.Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad are expected to lend their voices again in the short. Oscar-winning screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will team-up again for this endeavor.The two sisters have also appeared in the live-action ABC TV show Once Upon a Time, which includes a whole other cast of fairy tale characters. It’s still too early to speculate when Frozen 2 will premiere considering that it’s still in early development but seeing that the original premiered in winter to stay with the theme, then maybe this too will have a chilly release date. Now we just need to know the year.
