Batman v Superman is for most of us a dream come true mainly because the premise is something we’d all been waiting for. It essentialy pits two of the most beloved super heroes of all time in a conflict that will, no doubt, be spectacular. Also it may answer the age old question of “Who would win in a fight Batman or Superman? “. Well, ultimately the answer might not satisfy one particular camp but Scott Snyder’s recent comic book take of the iconic showdown gives us a satisfying one : “neither”. Yet now we also have news of Batman’s most trusted ally, Alfred. And his involvement in this particular movie won’t be that impactful but his portrayal, by Jeremy Irons will be something new.
Oscar winner Jeremy Irons revealed some details of his role as Alfred in the upcoming big budget film Batman v Superman. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at Marrakech Fest, the actor confessed that because the film is so filled with characters (some of which will most likely be getting a solo movie down the line), he won’t be having such a “large role”. But even if Batman’s butler won’t be appearing on screen as much, Irons assures us that the Alfred in Batman v Superman is “quite a different Alfred than we have seen so far.” In the comics Alfred Pennyworth raised Bruce Wayne since he was a kid and during Wayne’s caped crusader days, Alfred offered fatherly advice and emotional support. Plus in some iterations he was a combat surgeon. Jeremy Irons says that “Zack Snyder had very clear views about what he wanted. I would just say he’s more hands-on perhaps than just a butler.”So this Alfred maybe played a role in training the soon to be Batman? Considering the actor’s fit appearance he may lend a more physical approach to Alfred.
Nolan’s previous Dark Knight entries also featured a very capable and helping Alfred ( played by Michael Caine) one who was in most cases hands-on. It remains to be seen how Zack Snyder will breathe new life in this important character. Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice will also star Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams and of course Ben Affleck as Batman. The movie is slated for a 25 March 2016 release.
