Magic Leap’s curious tech has over half a billion in funding

Many companies like Magic Leap promote their ideas on Kickstarter but most of them can’t secure a budget due to lack of interest, shoddy presentation or mainly because they bite more than they can chew. But Magic Leap has gotten the attention(and investment) of Google, Obvious Ventures, Qualcomm and Legendary Entertainment. Convert that attention into financial backing plus peer interest and you’ve got yourself a strong budget. And by strong I mean 542 million dollars. The Florida-based company has acquired massive amounts of money not only because of its strong augmented reality concept but because it can be applied to more than just one domain.CEO Rony Abovitz believes that Magic Leap will enter the trillion dollar range annually.

The prospects of what the technology behind Magic Leap’s idea is all about is still shrouded in mistery. From what information is available though, the device will be able to project life-like images onto the user’s retina and thus creating the illusion of a very real dimension.Something along the lines of Oculus Rift maybe.Regarding the shape of the tech,Abovitz states that the tech will be a “lighweight wearable”.What Magic Leap is trying to achieve is to combine in a more fluid manner sight and touch : “Your hand is happy, but your eye is not. What I mean by your eye is not happy, if you step outside your office and look at San Francisco Bay, it’s just this visual feast, and there’s no movie theater, there’s no television display, there’s nothing that will ever match the grandeur of what our brains can create in term of visual experience.”

Being akin to the Oculus Rift extends only to the point of the tech being associated with augmented reality as their new device will not be focused only on gaming. Instead of the head display it will be portable device.By having two phrases such as “the world is your new desktop”and “the world is your new silver screen”may point out as to why Legendary Pictures is interested in this project. We have arrived in an age where traditional media is becoming sidelined by other less “heavy” ways of presenting us not only eye-candy but real sensations.Again, Abovitz states that Magic Leap is not like Oculus as their device will be able to provide 3D-digital objects while being in the real world.A well established communion of real and virtual. There is a lot of potential here, and the attention Magic Leap has received over time is worthy proof.
