It appears that North Korea has been identified as the culprit behind the cyber attack that was orchestrated in November against Sony Pictures. The FBI’s response followed soon after Seth Rogen’s and James Franco’s satire The Interview, which had the plot of assassinating Kim Jong-un, had been denied a theatrical release and now the cyber group called The Guardians of Peace have been associated as North Korean collaborators.Even though North Korea praised the efforts of this group, they denied that they had any involvement.Nevertheless, the U.S government is certain of the source. On Friday, the FBI said :”As a result of our investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S Government departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions.”
North Korea had been the prime suspect since the beginning of this fiasco, so this information comes as no surprise to many of us.Yet there is still the question of what will follow. No word as to what’s to do next but White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest has confirmed how the federal government was considering a “proportional response”to what happened at Sony. What does that mean, though is still subject of discussion. This may very well be interpreted as an act of war.The hackers issued warnings on 16 December in which all theaters who would screen The Interview would be in danger. The terrorists compared what would have transpired to the events of 9/11.All theaters soon refused to screen The Interview. Such threats couldn’t have gone unnoticed.
The Sony cyber attack concluded in many movies leaking online such as Annie, Fury, Mr. Turner and Still Alice. Even an early script from James Bond’s next installment, Spectre. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg.More than one terrabyte of information was stolen and not just movies but executive emails, employee Social Security numbers, and financial information were also among the sensitive data. The NSA and the FBI found traces which linked North Korea to the hacks. CNN revealed how the hackers routed their attack through various servers from all over the world such as Asia, Europe and Latin America:”: “The hackers used common DNS masking techniques to make it look like it was coming from those places, but the National Security Agency and FBI were able to track it back to North Korea.”Even President Barack Obama said in a press conference issued today how Sony made a mistake by not releasing The Interview. Many people from Hollywood are also of the same opinion.
