Razer Nabu X: Low-priced smart band

Razer has been a gadget master all along, but not only when we are talking about gaming; the new Razer Nabu X is a smartband with attitude. The announcement made at CES 2015 featured the Razer Nabu X at a staggering low price of $50. For a fitness band with light-up and buzz features on notifications it ain’t bad at all. Last year Razer had an attempt in the smartband market, but its product, the Razer Nabu, didn’t quite hit the mark.

In contrast to its predecessor, the Razer Nabu X  is more of an entry-level band that aims towards being affordable to the wide public. This version of the band doesn’t feature a display, but three-color LED lights (green, blue or red), plus a vibrating buzz to alert for smartphone notifications. An app that is made available for both iOS and Android customizes the Nabu X’s color patterns to signal different things, such as: incoming tweets, Facebook notifications/messages, incoming phone calls, Viber calls etc.

The Razer Nabu X is able to keep track of basic fitness activities via its accelerometer, much like the old Nabu: steps, estimated burnt calories and automated sleep-tracking feature. Among the features of the Nabu X smartband we find the proximity-based social sharing of Twitter and/or Facebook contacts with another Nabu X device, if you happen to get next to one. While you are at it why not check what your fellow Razer Nabu X owner has been recently playing on Steam. Care for a quick DOTA 2 match mate?

The Razer Nabu X will be made available in three color schemes. And to make things more interesting, the device features a removable plastic core that can be suited to different colored Nabu X bands. The battery life tops at seven days and the device is water resistant. The Razer Nabu X will be on shelves next month for just $50, but subscribers to Razer-Insider can purchase it for just $20. That’s quite a neat deal, but will it performe per its qualifications? One will just have to wait and see.
