LG Display: Double Edge-touchscreen Concept at CES 2015

If Samsung got a head start on the edge-touchscreen handsets with the Galaxy Note Edge, than LG Display, LG’s smaller brother, got the thumbs up with a new concept. Unlike the Note Edge which is only curved on one side, the LG Display features a double curvature. With LG going all out at CES 2015 with the G Flex 2 and a boat-load of curved TV’s, LG Display had to catch up to its big brother.

The screen on the new LG Display concept isn’t something too impressive at the moment. It only features a 720p resolution on a 6-inch HD plastic OLED display. On the other hand, the curved edges can be used as side screens, only narrower. You can manage app access by making one of the edges an app-access-bar, while making the other one a notification pop-out bar, or whatever you want. The customization options are up to you.

The fuss around the Note Edge was quite widespread, so a dual-edge touch screen phone wasn’t a far fetched idea for LG. As such, LG Display decided to do just that and show its worth with this concept handset. In this case, to make a success story out of their concept, LG Display would need to overcome the biggest weakness of the Note Edge: making good use of its edge screens. This is quite the feat, as it requires help from app developers and if this is a one time affair for LG Display, I doubt many will jump at this project.

Even if the concept has not been given a name, LG Display confirmed that the handset is ready for mass production. It shouldn’t come as a big surprise if by the 2nd quarter of 2015 we will seeLG Display’s concept displayed on store shelves. It might even be as soon as MWC 2015 in March. Who knows?
