Weekend Box Office – Fifty Shades of Grey Blows Charts on Valentine’s Day

The weekend box office of 13-15 February 2015 was a celebratory one and the vast majority of couples chose to spend their happy Valentine’s Day watching a sensual movie. That Fifty Shades of Grey is a mainstream production is proven by the high figures gathered in the supposedly most romantic day of the year. Released on 13 February, the romance drama became the number one movie of the weekend box office with the record sum of $81,700,000.

Fifty Shades of Grey was initially supposed to be released in October 2014, but postponing it for Valentine’s Day was a winning marketing scheme. The social pressure of the day and the previous success of the supporting novels forced a large number of people into theatres this weekend. In the day of its release, Fifty Shades of Grey cashed in a total of $30,300,000 gross, followed by a Saturday increase with $36,700,000. Sunday was the least productive day for the first movie of the trilogy (apparently, Mr. Grey’s shades will multiply to 150 in the following years), with a sum less than half of the one gathered in the release day: $14,670,000.

The second position of the weekend box office was taken by an adventure comedy, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The Matthew Vaughn directed movie cashed in $35,600,000 gross, less than the most productive day of the leading position. Although number 2 received a better mark on IMDb than the hit of the weekend, (3.5 and 8.3 is a great argument) it still remained behind Fifty Shades of Grey in box office charts. Also behind the romance was the movie version of animated Sponge Bob, the leading position of last weekend’s box office. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water gathered $30,540,000, which ruled Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated American Sniper out of the first three positions. Completing the first five positions of the weekend box office chart, Jupiter Ascending got $9,430,000 gross. Although promising in last week’s chart, the science-fiction production could not fight Valentine’s mightiness.
