The harsh criticism made by Michael Moore to U.S. President George W. Bush, the passionate kiss between Angelina Jolie and her brother, the confession about a gay teacher are among the most shocking moments in the history of the Academy Awards festival. The 87th edition of the Oscars will be held on 22nd of February at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Starting with 1929, when the first edition of Academy Awards took place, there were many moments and shocking incidents during the ceremony:
A passionate kiss between Adrien Brody and Halle Berry. The star of the movie ‘The pianist’ jumped on Halle Berry and kissed her crazy, when he came on the stage to accept the Oscar Award for best actor in a leading role, from her hands, in 2003.
Melissa Leo pronounced the word ‘fuck’ during a speech of thanks. Everything seemed to go well during the speech of thanks of Melissa Leo who won in 2011 the Academy Award for best actress in a supporting role, in the movie ‘The Fighter’. Referring to the speech which won the year before, Melissa Leo said, ‘When I looked at Kate (Winslet), last year, everything seemed so fucking easily’. In the end, she apologized, but it was already too late.
The Movie Director Michael Moore criticized Americans’ involvement in the war in Iraq. Moore shocked everybody with his speech of thanks, when he received the Academy Award for best documentary for the ‘Bowling for Columbine,’ in 2002 because of his harsh criticism regarding the former President George W. Bush.
Tom Hanks revealed that one of his teachers in high school is gay. When he won the Oscar for best lead male role, for the movie ‘Philadelphia’ in 1994, Hanks paid homage to a man who probably would have liked to remain in the shadow. Hanks thanked Rawley Farnsworth, his theater professor in high school, which described him as “one of the most awesome American gay”. The teacher had not talked yet in public about his sexual orientation.
Angelina Jolie was kissed passionately by her brother, James Haven, in 2011
Director Roberto Benigni has raced on the chairs to the stage where he received the Academy Award for best supporting actor in 1999 for the role in ‘La Vita e Bella’.
Jennifer Garner was tripped on the stairs that led to the stage. She climbed on the stage and ashamed, she presented an Oscar Award, in 2006, after she stumbled on her long train on the stairs: ‘I do my own stunts’, she joked;
David Niven was interrupted by a naked man who was running in front of him on the stage in 1974;
Roman Polanski received a ban from the organizers of the Festival. In 2003, Polanski won the Academy Award for Best Director for ‘The pianist’. But because of his dismal past, he did not show up at the Gala, because he would have been arrested right away for pedophilia. When they announced that he won the prize, the whole audience applauded him standing on.
Can we expect something shocking this year as well? With host Neil Patrick Harris on stage, nothing is impossible. We’ll just have to tune in this Sunday and watch the Academy Awards to find out!
