Pebble Time Steel may steal Apple’s thunder

The Pebble Time Steel smartwatch is Pebble’s second product to be funded on Kickstarter which is no surprise considering how the company managed to raise $10 million in just two days for their first smartwatch, Pebble Time. Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky announced the new smartwatch version at the Mobile World Congress which was held this Tuesday. Pebble Time was launched last week and it was a success, as over 60 thousand people pre-ordered the watch and were willing to pay from up to $179 dollars. Now Pebble Steel promises a bit more.

SteelĀ is essentially a heavier( not by much) and enriched version of Time. The smartwatch’s exterior is made out of stainless steel and will come in three different colors: stainless steel, black and gold. Besides the metalic design, the Pebble Time Steel is 1mm thicker and for good cause. It is said that Steel will have a battery capable of lasting a whopping 10 days after 1 charge as opposed to Pebble Times’ 7 day run or Apple Watch’s 1 day stretch.Speaking of Apple Watch, which will be available in April, Migicovsky states that other developers will have the freedom of making apps for the Pebble Time Steel. So, we’ll probably have an abundance of various fun apps. The laminated display is also a step up as it eliminates the air gap that Time has. Also you can expect a large array of straps if you’re in to the whole “looks” category plus Pebble is launching a Smart Straps program that will enable others to create their own awesome straps. With a twist.

The Smart Straps program is a way in which a user can attach and swipe straps with different functionalities. If you want to go jogging, for example, attach a strap with a GPS function. Or maybe you want to see how cold it is outside. Why not swap your GPS strap with one that monitors temperature.Pebble Time Steel will be available through the same Kickstarter campaign and pre-order costs $250 while the retail price will be $299.Expect Pebble Time Steel to be available in July.
