The weekend box office of 20-22 March 2015 was marked by the highly expected release of the second movie in The Divergent Series: Insurgent. By gathering the sum of $54,025,000, the sequel proved that it is a proud follower of last year’s Divergent. Apart from being the sequel of a box office favorite, Insurgent might have gained its leading position and high gross due to Shailene Woodley, who has definitely been on the up and up.
The weekend box office leader, Insurgent, was predicted to gain around $60 million, thing which proved to be not far from the truth. In its release day, Insurgent managed to gather $21,310,000, according to Box Office Mojo. Saturday, Insurgent met with a slight decrease in numbers and a total of $19,875,000, whilst Sunday meant even a bigger downfall with a gross of $12,840,000.
Number two position at the weekend box office was Disney fantasy Cinderella. Although not a fresh release (released 13 March), the fairy-tale managed to gather $34,492,000, quite a high number in comparison to the following positions. As number three of the weekend box office we meet Liam Neeson with another 13 March released picture, this time an action crime entitled Run All Night. The gross of $5,115,000 proves that although old-fashioned, fairy-tales have not lost their charm and fantasy. Box office number four picture was a 20 March release, The Gunman, a Sean Penn war drama which gathered a total of $5,008,707.
The long-lasting picture in the top five titles of the weekend box office was Kingsman: The Secret Service, which, with a total of $4,600,000, managed to remain in a top position – an impressive place, considering that it was released more than a month ago, on 13 February 2015.
