The weekend box office of 3-5 April 2015 pertained, as previously foreseen, to Furious 7. More than a chart ruler, the action sequel was a record breaker and will most certainly remain a leader for the rest of the month. The melancholy and the emotional implication of Paul Walker’s passing was definitely a key factor in establishing the box office gross of Furious 7 (but not the only element), which reached a record total of $143,620,000.
Furious 7 is, according to Variety, a fresh top grossing picture for the month of April. With its $143,620,000, Furious 7 surpassed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and its $95 million debut gross. What is more, the 3 April released picture, proved to be the best grossing movie of the entire Fast and Furious series. But the Paul Walker tribute movie is a record setter in more than one sense. If it is the number one position of the weekend box office, Furious 7 is part of another prestigious box office chart, as it ranks ninth among the top ten openings in history.
Judging by the sums gathered by Furious 7, all the other titles in the weekend box office managed to gather really modest figures. Home (2015), last weekend’s box office leader, got a total of $27,400,000. The cute animation was followed by another action-comedy movie, Get Hard, which gathered a total of $12,925,000. The Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart picture is an obvious step back from the figures gathered by Home (2015). The next title of the weekend box office brings us back to childhood and fantasy realms: Cinderella (2015), a once box office ruler and already veteran (released 13 March) gathered a total of $10,289,000. Last but not least, picture number five in the weekend box office was The Divergent Series: Insurgent, another powerful sequel, but one impossible to come near Furious 7.
