Orange Is the New Black is the black humor series which easily passes the boundaries from comedy to drama, with both genres subtly cohabiting. At first sight, OITNB seems to be a comedy of errors, about the life of Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling), who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison for a petty crime which occurred years ago. Later on, as life in prison reveals to be more and more difficult to handle, crime mingles with comedy and dramatic situations become a habit in such a shady context.
Orange Is the New Black premiered in 2013, year during which the first season was broadcast. 2014 came with a second season and more prison trouble and passionate drama for the characters of the comedy crime series. Orange Is the New Black gathered quite an impressive amount of nominations and wins since 2013, with 4 Golden Globe nominations and another 31 wins & 49 nominations.
Orange Is the New Black was created by Jenji Kohan (also known for Weeds TV series) and is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, which tackles on the writer’s own experience in a prison.
