Weekend Box Office – Furious 7 Remains Number 1

The weekend box office of 17-19 April is still marked by the easy lead of Furious 7, the worldwide box office record setter and James Wan-directed action picture. Although it is a 3 April released movie, the Paul Walker tribute remains at the top of all charts. Weekend box office top five titles welcomed two new releases, which struggled for positions number two and three. A comedy sequel and a cyber-horror picture were unable to surpass the chart leader of past weeks.

That Furious 7 is a chart leader is not a novelty, be it worldwide box office or not. Its gross of $29,060,000 is, therefore, no reason for debate and wonder. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak is not amazed: “This is how you build a record year”, he states (via Variety). Dergarabedian continues: “These are summer-style numbers in April”. Box office mojo provides box office gains per days, thus we can analyze the evolution of titles throughout the weekend. On Friday, Universal’s hit gathered $8,300,000, followed by a Saturday increase with a total of $12,900,000 and a Sunday decrease with $7,856,000.

Weekend box office number two is Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, an Andy Fickman-directed action comedy. Although critics seem not to appreciate this comedy sequel, it easily managed to reach such a high position in charts with the sum of $24,000,000. Box office position number three is another fresh release: Unfriended. The Levan Gabriadze-directed picture is a horror of nowadays, as it brings mystery and fear to virtual reality, with a supernatural force using the account of a deceased person. The horror movie gathered a total of $16,020,000 and was followed in charts by Home (2015), a comedy animation with $10,300,000 gross. The fifth title in the weekend box office was The Longest Ride, a drama romance about past love. The George Tillman Jr.-directed picture starring Scott Eastwood, Britt Robertson, Alan Alda gathered a total of $6,850,000.
