In Vienna the capital of Austria there is a marked change to the usual signs at traffic lights. The usual the world over is a gender neutral lone figure flashing green to cross the road or red to not.
Here in Austria in time for the Eurovision song contest there has been a city wide change to a variety of different figures. Gone are the singular figures, lonely and neutral. In their place are couples in love, holding hands with hearts above their heads. Some are heterosexual couples and others are homosexual, whether with women partners or men partners, each holding hands.
The city are trying to promote issues on two counts, firstly the aim is to try and make the city’s streets safer for pedestrians. The hope being that people will patiently wait to see these new traffic signs in effect. But secondly the city wants to promote Vienna’s open-mindedness.
With about 40 countries participating in the Eurovision and an historically large gay fan base it’s a perfect time to demonstrate that our society is open, different, complex and everyone should be able to stay safe in their streets with these gay street lights in Vienna for Eurovision.
This year’s Eurovision is being held in Vienna and the finals are taking pace tonight, with the usual hysteria for the competition there will be a huge party tonight. Last year’s winner Conchita Wurst is partly hosting who is a drag queen with a beard and an amazing clothes horse for super sexy frocks. These new street lights fit right in to the feel of the competition.
This year is a first with there being an Australian entry. So who will win?
