Problems in Rio: Troubled Olympic Preparations

The 2016 Summer Olympics is scheduled from August 5 to August 21, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As the event draws nearer however, there is a rising number of voices calling out for its cancellation or transfer to a different location. Everyone knows that those voices will be drowned out by the fact that billions of dollars have already been spent on the preparations for the games.

There are numerous concerns now regarding the preparation for the event and other things that can cause problems. The first negative thing that was noticed about the planned Rio Olympics was the inadequacy of the preparations.

Way back in 2014, an IOC official called the preparations for the Olympics as the worst that he has seen so far. Things did not get any better as the schedule for the games got nearer.  One of the main criticisms that is being thrown against the organizers of the event, is their failure to clean the parts of the sea where some water events will be held. They promised to clean up the waters there but tests have shown that the waters can actually cause infections.

Another sign that the city is unprepared was the collapse of the cycle lane.

But the biggest problem faced by the organizers of the Rio Olympics would be the presence of the Zika virus. The disease which can be spread by mosquitoes has been found to be more dangerous than first supposed. It has been connected with babies being born with birth defects.

Fear of the disease is believed to be the reason why ticket sales for the events is way below than expected. Some athletes have even expressed that they will not be participating in the games.
