Galaxy S5 vs. Oppo Find 7 – battle for power

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is one of the most appreciated flagships of 2014, while Oppo Find 7 is one of the underdogs who has been called one of the greatest competitors of the Galaxy S5. Both the phones come as great examples of top-notch hardware and software, with Snapdragon and Android working together on both flagships. While the Galaxy S5 is widely popular, the Oppo Find 7 is one of the phones most haven’t even heard of. Nonetheless, both these phones deserve a look from anyone interested in mobile technology or looking to upgrade their phone experience.

The Galaxy S5 is Samsung’s flagship of the year, but the company has since released phones even more suitable to be called high-end devices, such as the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy Alpha. Oppo isn’t far behind, though, with the upcoming Oppo N3 flagship with a rotating camera and aerospace-grade aluminium alloy. This comparison between the Galaxy S5 and the Oppo Find 7 aims to size up the two phones and give an overview of the ups and downs, quirks and perks as well as drawbacks of each.

The Galaxy S5 has been criticized for its design so much, that Samsung decided to come up with a new phone line, based on the Galaxy Alpha smartphone with an aluminium frame around the phone. The Galaxy S5 is made of plastic and many call the design of its back panel band aid-like, due to its perforated material. It’s true that the Galaxy S5 doesn’t look or feel quite that premium, but it doesn’t feel cheap either, since tests have proven that the Galaxy S5 bend-gate is non-existent. The Oppo Find 7 also has a polycarbonate back panel, but it avoids the dimpled-perforated look in favor of an LED notification light in the front, which is absolutely marvelous, in my opinion.

The Galaxy S5 has a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED screen with a 1080*1920 resolution and 432 ppi pixel density running on a Snapdragon 801 CPU clocked at 2.5 GHz with Adreno 330 GPU, 2 GB RAM and either 16 or 32 GB internal storage expandable via microSD card,  a 16 MP rear camera with tons of features built in, including a pretty cool auto-focus capability, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top. A fingerprint sensor and IP67 certification are also features present on the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 from Samsung is a pretty high-end device with a $700 price tag off-contract and it offers great specs for the considerable cash.

The Oppo Find 7 has a 5.5 inch IPS LCD screen with a 1440*2560 resolution and 534 ppi pixel density. The Oppo Find 7 specs are mostly the same as the LG G3 ones, with the same Snapdragon 801, Adreno 330 and 3 GB RAM for the single 32 GB internal storage version, expandable via microSD. The Oppo Find 7 comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box, but you can update that to Android 4.4 KitKat. The Find 7 has Color OS on top of Android 4.4 and it’s a fun UI to work with, thanks to its simplicity and colorful interface. The handset has a 13 MP main shooter and a 5 MP front camera, perfect for selfies. The Find 7 is just a bit cheaper than the Galaxy S5, with a $600 price tag.

After having reviewed these specs, we can say that if you want the bigger screen and LED notification, the Oppo Find 7 should be your choice, as you also get a better resolution and pixel density than that on the Galaxy S5. Processing power is roughly the same on both devices, but the Find 7 tends to lag around when playing graphics-intensive games, so if you’re a gaming-oriented person, the Galaxy S5 should be your first choice, just to be safe. Also, if you’re a person with an active lifestyle, the waterproof Galaxy S5 would be more suitable for you.

Overall, both the Galaxy S5 and the Oppo Find 7 are high-end phones with great specs and performance, and it ultimately depends on your personal opinion and habits which you end up buying. I would personally choose the Galaxy S5 because it has a smaller form factor and I have small hands. I would struggle one-handed even with the Galaxy S5, not to mention the 5.5 inch Oppo Find 7. I do prefer the Galaxy S5 because of its waterproof certification, too, because I tend to get careless with my devices. I do enjoy the high-res screen on the Oppo Find 7 more, but I would rather be able to handle my phone than enjoy that bright, crisp screen.
