Oppo Electronics Announces World’s Thinnest Smartphone

Oppo Electronics, a Chinese electronics manufacturer based in the Guangdong province, has announced two new handset models: the N3 that appeals to mobile photographers with its 16 megapixel camera on a 206 degree motorized mount, and the R5, the proud new holder of the “world’s thinnest smartphone” title with its thickness of just 4.85 millimeters. The final release date for the devices was not yet announced.

The Oppo N3 will be a device focusing on mobile photography, while not ignoring all the other features a user would search for in a new smartphone. Its specifications are great – it has a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor running at 2.3 GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU, 2 gigabytes of RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable up to 128GB with a MicroSD card), a 3,000 mAh LiPo battery, hidden behind a 5.5″ full HD display with a 403 PPI pixel density covered in GorillaGlass 3. The real goodies come when we take a look at the camera, though – a 16 megapixel sensor, a dual-mode LED flash, capable of recording 4K video at 30fps, full HD video at 60fps and 720p slow motion video at 120fps. The motorized camera will be controllable through the phone’s touchscreen or by using the O-Click 2.0 Bluetooth remote control, included with the phone.

The Oppo R5 will be an impressive piece of technology, with its aluminium frame and steel covers, hiding an opta-core Snapdragon 615 CPU running at 1.5GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU, 2 gigabytes of RAM, 16 gigabytes storage space (MicroSD is not mentioned for this model), and will be fitted with a 2,000 mAh Li-Po battery. This model will also have a 5.5″ AMOLED display, with a Full HD resolution, but a higher pixel density – 423 PPI, beating the iPhone 6 plus at this aspect. The phone will be fitted with a 13 megapixel Sony Exmor IMX214 BSI sensor, plus a 5 megapixel front facing camera with a 83 degree wide lens. It will be able to record 4K video at 30fps, full HD video at 60 fps and 720p slow motion video at 120fps.

Both new phones will be delivered with Oppo’s own ColorOS 2.0, based on Android 4.4, and with VOOC mini Rapid Charger, capable of charging the phones’ batteries to 75% in a matter of minutes. The Oppo N3 will be have a price tag of $649, while the R5 will cost $499 (both prices are without a contract). Both phones are expected to become available globally in December, in time for the holiday shopping season.
