The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, a title in the Zelda series released for Nintendo 64 in 2000, is getting remade for the Nintendo 3DS, Japanese console maker Nintendo announced at a recent press event. Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata, has promised the game to maintain its level of challenge, while being accessible for anyone, Polygon reports.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was sold in over three million copies since its release in 2000. It was re-released for the Nintendo GameCube as part of The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition and for the Wii Virtual Console in the PAL region in 2009. Now the time has come for its new remake, a Nintendo 3DS title, which will be released in the spring of 2015. Majora’s Mask is the second 3D title in the “Zelda” series, and is considered by critics to be one of the darker releases of the series.
The action of game takes place in an alternate setting, Termina – the other games are usually set in Hyrule – where the Skull Kid has stolen the Mask, an ancient and powerful artifact, and causes the land’s moon to slowly fall to the ground. Link needs to find a way to prevent the disaster, repeatedly traveling back in time to do so. During the quest Link gets to use a series of masks, allowing the transformation into different beings, and learns new tunes on the ocarina that have different effects on the surrounding world – opening passages or altering the flow of time. The game has a complex story, and was highly acclaimed by critics for its superior graphics.
“As we worked on the remake version, we set out to maintain the original level of challenge, while keeping the game accessible for anyone. So we also focused on making sure the gameplay experience was as smooth as possible,” Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has declared.
