The list of the founding members is impressive: Alcatel-Lucent, Charter Communications, Cisco, Comcast, Epix, Fox, KT, Level3, Liberty Global, Limelight, MLB, Qwilt, Telecom Italia, Telstra, Ustream, Wowza and Yahoo – content providers, delivery networks, and technology providers. The announcement about the forming of the alliance has been made last Friday. The Alliance will deepen the cooperation between the companies, speed up innovation and “redefine the way video is streamed across mobile and fixed networks to consumers worldwide”.
The Alliance will focus on three key elements at first: the creation of an open architecture and functionality of network and cloud based streaming and caching, the creation of a common approach to defining, measuring, optimizing and reporting the quality of the video streaming experience. for providers, operators and end users alike, and creating standards or interoperability and performance to allow the efficient streaming high definition and high quality to consumers in all corners of the globe. Online video consumption has grown exponentially since the technology was first introduced, creating new challenges for every stakeholder in the video streaming ecosystem. The magnitude of the growth is calling for a new, open architecture allowing every part of the streaming video distribution chain to be scalable, while keeping the high quality of experience expected by the end users.
