No matter how hard he tries, Tom Cruise is just always pulled back in the blockbuster fray. Summit Entertainment is reportedly courting the famous actor to play the role of the mentor in the Highlander reboot. This role was previously portrayed by Sean Connery in the original 1986 movie which eventually garnered a cult following and had enough popularity to span four sequels and two tv shows. Even if what followed did not prove to be on par with the original, a reboot does makes sense and can revitalize the series. Cedric Nicholas Troyan will make his directorial debut with Highlander , having worked as second unit director for Snow White and the Huntsman.
The original Highlander’s story dealt with immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod and his quest for vengeance against the barbarian Kurgan, a battle waged across time for an all-powerfull prize. In the movie starred Christopher Lambert as MacLeod and Sean Connery as Juan Ramirez. Summit Entertainment seems to want Ramirez’s shoes to be filled by Cruise but there’s been no word yet from the actor due to him currently filming the latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise. Tom Cruise’s representative recently told the Wrap that Highlander “is one of many projects that come to him and he discusses” stating that the actor is “far from any talks” and that “he is offered tons of projects”. And a Highlander insider has dismissed the idea of Summit being in negociations with Tom Cruise thus making it pretty hard to speculate wether or not the actor will consider taking this role as his next project.
The Highlander script is written by Art Marcum. Matt Holloway who both contributed in writing the script for Iron Man and Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter, Twilight).Neal H. Moritz is producing alongside Peter Davis. Justin Lin, the man behind the Fast and the Furious franchise will executive produce even though he was once attached as director.Little else is known up to this point about who will actually direct but if Tom Cruise picks this movie as his next endeavour we are guaranteed for a good action movie. Considering the film is still in development, a release date is not available at the moment.
