Pacific Rim was the epitome of monster movies. Giant mechs versus giant monsters, could it get much better than that? Maybe the sequel can.The first movie, even though it had a premise that would spike even the most mature person’s vitals, didn’t do great at the box office but it did well enough to guarantee an eventual second flick. Director Guillermo del Toro has shared with Collider some pieces of info that have to do with the continuation. Settings are different and characters from the first movie will return.
Guillermo del Toro, the man behind fan favorites such as Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, will have a different vision in Pacific Rim 2 and promises us a whole new type of Kaiju. Kaiju’s were the enormous creatures that invaded Earth from another dimension and destroyed numerous cities. They were eventually defeated by our heroes with the help of giant mechanical robots called Jaegers.Del Toro shared with us that the story of Pacific Rim 2 is set in the future where the world is no longer threatened by Kaijus: “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.” The director confirmed that two actors from the first Pacific Rim will return, specifically Burn Gorman who played Gottlieb and Charlie Day who played Dr. Newton Geszler. It will be interesting to see how the world has evolved without constant warfare with giant monsters and how the Jaegers have been put to use. But what about the protagonists from the first movie? Will Mako and Raleigh team up once again? Del Toro did say that he will keep some characters in the back seat up until the end of the second movie maybe in hopes of directing another Pacific Rim in the future.
Guillermo del Toro is currently in post production for his next film Crimson Peak which will premiere in 2015. Pacific Rim 2 has a lot of potential and already has a solid lore behind it so we’ll just have to wait for key information. The sequel is slated for April 2017.
