Joel McHale is fed up with poking fun at TV’s most idiotic moments and is invading our comments section instead. The Community star will reportedly produce the pilot for comedian Michael Kosta’s new show called Comments Section. Well the name is a no brainer, isn’t it? According to Deadline, E! has greenlit the pilot for the show marking this Joel McHale’s first producing venture for E!. The star has hosted another show in the past for the TV network called The Soup.
McHale and Kosta will abandon the formulaic format of discussing the week’s most popular moments in television and will focus on “deconstructing the often snarky comments on popular websites”. The show will focus mainly on the funniest pieces of text written by people on the web. We don’t know yet if they’ll focus on one site such as Youtube or whether it’ll be a “no stone unturned” type of approach.Sounds like E! is getting with the times and sees the potential of web gold.This is by no means something new as numerous talk show hosts and Youtube channels are doing similar things albeit never before has somebody focused only on this particular comedic side. We have, for example, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel’s sketch called Celebrity Read Mean Tweets where Hollywood stars read insults from random people on Twitter. It’s something similar yet the premise for E!’s new show is somewhat new. We all know that the Youtube comments sections are essentially a gold mine for comedy so if the show is a success, we’ll surely see it have a lot of seasons.
Comments Section will also be produced by Jason Burns (Free Period) and KP Anderson, The Soup’s showrunner, will executive produce with his production company Pygmy Wolf. Joel McHale will also reprise his role as Jeff Winger in the unkillable Community which was recently saved by Yahoo and will enjoy a sixth season (and possibly a movie?). Comments Section currently has no airing date but that is likely to change in the near future. It’s about time somebody had the guts to venture into the not so polite and always disturbing realm that is the comments section.
