The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 hits again as top position of the weekend box office. As most of the new theatrical releases are kept as a Christmas surprise, it appears that it is not difficult for The Hunger Games to maintain its leading position. In connection to the places following the long-time leader, nothing much has changed either, the top five chart remaining approximately the same, with a little switch in the following positions.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 was not only the definite leader once more, but this time a decrease in numbers was visible: it gained only $21,600,000 (whereas last weekend brought the franchise $56,875,000). Although a champion, one must reach an inevitable downfall at some point. On a more joyous note, the Hollywood Reporter remarks: ‘’Mockingjay is on the brink of passing up Captain America: The Winter Solider ($259.7 million) to become the No. 2 title of the year in North America to date after Guardians of the Galaxy ($332 million).’’ This if we take into consideration that this weekend added to the Games the already announced sum, just to reach a domestic total of $257.7 million.
Place number two kept its Penguins of Madagascar, just as last week, this time with a total of $11,100,000 (the decrease in figures is also visible in the case of the animation). Number three position was reconquered by the sequel comedy Horrible Bosses 2, starring Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, which last weekend waited in line as fifth position. Sean Anders’ comedy cashed in a total of $8,600,000 and the family friendly Buena Vista animation Big Hero 6 followed closely with the total sum of $8,130,000. Christopher Nolan’s space epic Interstellar remained visible in charts, but not in a leading position, with a total of $8,000,000. Anyway, it seems that the Matthew McConaughey starring Sci/Fi is a favorite in the overseas box office, as it was previously demonstrated and China remains enthralled by space travel, figures prove.
