Sony really can’t get a break, not even after Playstation just had its twentieth anniversary. This time, the Playstation Network and store have been briefly taken offline. It all started Sunday night when people tried to visit the Playstation Store. They couldn’t access the page but instead got a message that said “Page Not Found! It’s not you. It’s the Internet’s fault.” The problem lasted from Sunday night up until Monday morning.
What happened now may lead many of us into thinking that the attacks have to be linked with what happened not too long ago with Sony’s movie studio which was also breached by hackers. But this appears to be separate. The hack from two weeks ago stole 100 terabytes worth of Sony information including customer passwords, Sony employees’ Social Security numbers and even contracts with celebrities. This attack was considered to be from North Korea in a response to Seth Rogen’s and James Franco’s latest movie The Interview which is about a plot to assasinate Kim Jong-Un. The country denied having anything to do with what tranpired at Sony. The PSN issue seems to have resulted from a group of hackers called the Lizard Squad who also took credit with both the PSN and Xbox Live outages back in August. Playstation kept it cool on Twitter and assured that they are working to fix the problems. In the early hours of Monday, another tweet followed :”If you had difficulties signing into Playstation Network, give it a try now.”
Seems that Sony is getting attacked from all fronts and is still recuperating. Another group besides the Lizard Squad claimed to be behind the attacks of August so there is not way of telling yet who is responsible. The hacking was made by flooding the servers with useless information using a distributed denial-of-service attack. Sony is currently “ïnvestigating the root cause for the issue.”
