‘Think like a man too’ defeats ’22 Jump Street’ at the box office this weekend

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill might be the kings of Jump Street, but they are no longer the kings of the box office. The newly released Think like a man too rose to the top of the box office this weekend, grossing a solid $30 million from 2,225 screens. This is not bad at all, considering that the movie cost only $24 million to produce. Think like a man too is a comedy directed by Tim Story (Think like a man, Ride Along) and stars Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union.

While the box office numbers seem to be generous with the film, critics and the general public wasn’t. The film’s ratings aren’t stellar, and so far, Think Like a man too has an average score of 5.2 on IMDB and has a Metascore of 37/100, with a Metacritic User Score of 3.2. Ouch! The financial success of the flick can be attributed to a limited number of major releases lately. This statement is further emphasized if we look at the overall earnings of this particular June weekend and compare it to last year’s same weekend, when Brad Pitt’s World War Z and Monsters University were released. The overall weekend gross in the United States was $151 million this year, a stunning 37.4% less than the same weekend last year.

The other major new release this weekend was Jersey Boys, a film directed by Clint Eastwood, and a film that in general targeted an older audience. While not particularly successful financially, the film still grossed $13.5 million, which is not all bad considering that it cost around $40 million to produce. The film also has a long-lasting appeal to mature audiences that want to escape from the season’s typical blockbuster releases centered on action and superhero flicks. Last week’s 22 Jump Street brought in $29 million, while How to train your dragon 2 brought in $25.3 million.
