DOOB 3D Enables You to Own A 3D Printed Statue of Yourself

DOOB 3D is the latest trend in terms of portraiture and brings photography to another level. If you believed that selfies and the selfie stick are some of the greatest proofs of self-awareness, you are mistaken – DOOB came up with the idea of the 3D printed statue. The development of digital photography triggered a persistent fight between film and digital users, with the latter gaining unstoppable reign over the former. Now, you can leave all that behind and consider offering a relative or a friend a 3D statue of yourself instead of a picture and a frame – as odd or as appealing that might sound.

DOOB is a Germany founded company, which spread across the US and Japan. In order to shape its ‘’selfie statuettes’’, DOOB resorts to latest 3D technology. The process through which the statue is acquired involves a massive quantity of hardware and software: 54 DSLRs, 54 lenses, a complex 3-D modeling pipeline, a full-color 3-D printer and last but not least, a room-size scanning booth. The picture – which will later on turn into a statue – is taken inside a 3D scanning booth and the company apparently has eight available at the moment, spread in different cities of the world. If you are in Dusseldorf, Tokyo, at Santa Monica Place in Los Angeles, or in New York City’s Chelsea Market and you feel like owning a statue version of yourself, all you have to do is to step inside the scanning booth, expressively entitled ‘’Doob-licator’’. The cabin is equipped with numerous 54 Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLRs – ‘’arranged in nine columns of six cameras each’’ – which scan the customer in no time. Then, the 18–megapixel images reach the 3D printing centers and undergo a much longer process.

According to Wired, the price of a DOOB ‘’selfie statue’’ ranges from $95 to $695, depending on its size. No matter which variant you choose, you will own a figurine version of yourself, to put either on your desk or to use as centerpiece in a newly decorated room. Keep in mind: you can also bring along your dearly beloved pet, so you are immortalized together!
