The weekend box office of 27 February – 1 March 2015 is marked by two new releases in the top five titles – first and fifth placement. In the leading position, Will Smith brings us Focus, a comedy-crime movie about veteran con man Nicky and the apparition of an irresistible woman. Femme fatale Jess is played by Margot Robbie. The duo managed to attract audience, so the box office figures focused on Focus, with a total of $19,100,000 weekend gain.
Although a weekend box office leader, Focus did disappoint many analysts, who believed the incomes will be higher than the actual chart reality. For those who believe that Focus, together with Will Smith dissatisfied the audience, Variety had Jeff Goldstein, distribution executive vice president at Warner Bros, confess the following: ‘’He’s terrific in this film (…) But to compare a film like this to one of [Smith’s] tent pole films is unfair. He picked a project that was always slated to be a mid-range to low-range budget, and the results are consistent with that.”
In the second position of the weekend box office we have Kingsman: The Secret Service. The 13 February released movie gathered a total of $11,750,000, thus surpassing last weekend top film, Fifty Shades of Grey. Another title which went higher in charts, leaving Fifty Shades behind is once box office leader, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Although a 6 February release, the adventure comedy animation managed to remain in the top positions of the weekend box office charts with $11,200,000, no far behind movie number two.
The forth position was taken by previous box office leader, Fifty Shades of Grey. Although the film was a real box office hit and record breaker, its rapid downfall in charts proved that the picture was more marketing and propaganda than a really well-filmed and plot satisfying picture. Thus, Fifty Shades of Grey got a forth position and $10,927,000 gross.
The fifth position of the weekend box office was taken by another 27 February released movie. If our chart leader, Focus, is a Will Smith starring action comedy, The Lazarus Effect is a thrilling picture. The movie, which focuses on a group of medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life, managed to gain a total of $10,600,000.
