The weekend box office of 27-29 March 2015 was led by a fresh and promising animation, entitled Home, which managed to outrun not only another fresh release, but also last weekend’s top title, Insurgent. The other 27 March released movie was also a comedy, entitled Get Hard and starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Another novelty of the weekend box office was this time a horror story, It Follows, which took the fifth position in charts.
The weekend box office leader, Home, gathered quite a large sum for an animation movie, being thus a great surprise with the total of $54,000,000. In support of that argument, Variety shares some past record setters and their figures: ‘’It’s one of the studio’s best-ever openings for an original movie and the biggest debut it has had since 2012’s “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” kicked off to $60.3 million in 2012.’’ Being the next Madagascar is not an easy task, but it seems that the Home aliens are not foreigners to leading roles. The Tim Johnson directed animation focuses on the story of an alien who lands on Earth after having run from his own people. The alien furthermore becomes the friend of adventurous Tip. Jim Parsons is a great comedy actor and his voicing Oh might be one of the reasons behind Home’s box office success, without forgetting Rihanna as Gratuity ‘Tip’ Tucci.
Weekend box office position number two was taken by the other new release, Get Hard, which got a total of $34,610,000 gross. The Etan Cohen directed comedy is a story of a millionaire being prepped to go behind bars, starring Will Ferrell as James and Kevin Hart as Darnell.
Title number three was the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, which got a total of $22,075,000 at the weekend box office. It only took another week and some fresh titles to get the Robert Schwentke directed adventure sci-fi out of its leading position. The following position was Cinderella (2015) which cashed a total of $17,515,000 and a good position in the weekend box office.
The last title of the weekend box office top five title was this time a horror picture. It Follows has David Robert Mitchell as both director and writer. The picture has been well received not only by the audience, but also by critics. The sum gathered by the picture at the weekend box office was $4,021,000.
